1. The Problem

CANCER AND LEUKEMIA
Dr. David Carpenter, Dean at the School of Public Health, State University of New York believes it is likely that up to 30% of all childhood cancers come from exposure to EMFs.
Dr. Neil Cherry, a biophysicist and an elected official in New Zealand, said that studies indicate that EMF radiation causes everything from cancer in lab rats to neurological changes in humans. There is laboratory evidence that EMFs significantly change the activity of important enzymes related to growth and development of nerve and brain tissue and cancer cells, causing changes in metabolism and cell proliferation which may lead to cancer or fetal abnormalities.
In 2002, three epidemiologists at the California Department of Health Services individually concluded that EMF is either a Group 1 (carcinogenic to humans), Group 2A (probably carcinogenic to humans) or Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans) for childhood leukemia. In the same year, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of the World Health Organization, completed an evaluation of EMF and carcinogenic risks to humans. IARC concluded that EMF should be classified as a Group 2B carcinogen (possibly carcinogenic to humans). The cancer for this classification is childhood leukemia.
HEART DISEASE
There is epidemiological as well as laboratory evidence that EMFs change the function of the heart and induce stress which may lead to down-regulation or weakening of critical defense and repair mechanisms. This has been shown to adversely affect the mortality rate related to cardiac infarctions.
DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE
A study of suicide rates in 138,905 male electric utility workers, published in the Western Journal of Medicine, showed a corelation between estimated exposure to extremely low-frequency EMFs and a significant increase in the risk of suicide. Even stronger associations, up to a 3.5-fold increase, were found in men younger than 50. A separate report by Pacific NW Laboratory postulates that exposure to ELF is a potential contributing factor in depression. ELF fields may interfere with hormonal secretions which may exacerbate existing depression, or contribute to an onset of depression.
Martin Halper, the EPA’s Director of Analysis and Support says “I have never seen a set of epidemiological studies that remotely approached the weight of evidence that we’re seeing with EMFs..”

What this leads to is an impending epidemic. As you see with this graph, as cell phone usage increased between 1999 and 2003 so did the number of deaths and diagnosis from illnesses linked by research to cell phone radiation. If we don’t do something, the projection is that by the year 2010 three hundred million deaths will occur as a direct correlation to cell phone usage.
